Technology in secondary mathematics education: The role of calculators*

نویسنده

  • Barry Kissane
چکیده

The significance of hand-held technologies for secondary school mathematics education is analysed. In many secondary school mathematics classrooms in many countries, including Thailand, student access to sophisticated ICT facilities is either very limited or non-existent, so that hand-held technologies of scientific calculators and graphics calculators are critical. These are described and exemplified, together with some opportunities for effective calculator use for mathematics learning and teaching. The significance of technology for the content of the mathematics curriculum, its evolution, its teaching and its assessment are outlined and some issues associated with the relationship between human values and ICT are considered in the light of graphics calculators.

The Importance of Being Accessible: the Graphics Calculator in Mathematics Education*

The first decade of the availability of graphics calculators in secondary schools has just concluded, although evidence for this is easier to find in some countries and schools than in others, since there are gross socio-economic differences in both cases. It is now almost the end of the second decade since the invention of microcomputers and their appearance in mathematics educational settings...

The role of technology when teaching mathematics

The availability of technology has changed enormously during the last 20-30 years. From the large and clumsy desk calculators of the 1970’s over to the so called functional calculators in the 1980’s and during the last 10-15 years we have got graphing calculators as well as symbolic calculators. There are also calculators which include software for geometrical constructions on the market today....

Challenges in the use of Scientific Calculators in the Teaching and Learning Mathematics in Secondary School Education

Scientific calculators have emerged as useful tools for mathematical procedures and manipulations. From the year 2002, the ministry of education approved the use scientific calculators in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and in the classroom, as a tool to aid in computations. This was intended to avoid wastage of time in solving mathematical problems and improve s...

The Algebraic Calculator and Mathematics Education

This paper describes the recent development of hand-held algebraic calculators and evaluates their significance for secondary education. Sophisticated computer algebra systems (CAS) have been available to mathematicians for some years now but have been too powerful, too sophisticated and too expensive and have required too much access to powerful computers to have had much impact on teaching an...

Using Graphic Calculator in Teaching and Learning Mathematics: Efeects on Students’ Achievement and Meta-cognitive Skills

There has been a steady increase in interest in using hand-held technologies, in particular graphics calculators, by mathematics educators, curriculum developers and teachers. The choice of graphic calculators is motivated mainly by the potential for them to be available to essentially all students all the time (Kissane, 2 000). To date, there is a substantial body of research into the use of g...
